Camshaft drivebelts are extensively used in todays modern motorcars.
The camshaft drivebelt turns some of the major components inside the engine. However, sometimes the cambelt can snap, if not replaced.
The service schedule, based on the manufacturers specifications (see your handbook), should tell you, when the change is due and needs to be carried out to avoid failure of the belt.
If the cambelt should snap, the implications could be serious and may cause a lot of damage inside the engine and be very costly in some cases .
Some causes of cambelt failure are due to, not sticking to the service change times, of the cambelt, on higher mileage engines. A problem can relate to failure of other components wearing out, causing slack in the belt or idler wheel.
A water pump can also cause problems, as can contamination of the belt by water or oil, causing the belt to deteriorate quickly.
If buying a car, ask the owner when the cambelt was last replaced or check the service history and confirm that it has been replaced.
If you are in doubt, it would be better to replace the camshaft drivebelt.
